The New Look

The Apple Original series, The New Look, created by Todd Adam Kessler, is inspired by the life of Christian Dior as he navigated the horrors of World War II and launched his own fashion house in 1946.

It brings two historic runway events to life on screen: the first Dior Spring-Summer collection in 1947, and the show at the Sorbonne in 1955. Costumes made for the series, some of which are shown here, are the result of close collaboration with the House, which opened up its precious archives. What’s more, the opening scene of the series was filmed in the very place where one of the most significant events of Dior’s history took place almost 70 years ago.

Christian Dior was invited to give a conference on the aesthetics of Fashion in the Sorbonne’s Grand Amphitheatre in Paris on 3 August 1955. As the first couturier to speak at this prestigious university, he talked about how fashion is imagined and created for an audience of journalists, well-known personalities and around 1,200 foreign students taking classes on French civilisation. His presentation was followed by a runway show of ten Dior pieces, including the iconic Bar from 1947 – symbolizing the global triumph of Haute Couture.
