The Ateliers

Like a virtuous swarm of bees, Dior’s petites mains shape the dresses with their meticulous gestures.

“Creation is an ensemble of a thousand and one things, it's a thousand and one skills gathered around the couturier.”

In the secrecy of the ateliers at 30, Avenue Montaigne, Dior's bees, divided into the “flou” and “tailleur” workshops, bring collections to life in the space of just a few weeks. The white toiles, precious renderings of a sketch in 3D, are the genesis of the haute couture designs. Once the toile is presented on a live model and approved, the fabric is chosen from the hundreds of rolls, selected from samples two months prior, that have invaded the studio. Within ten days, the lines of the collection are established.

Combining art and exceptional craftsmanship, these iconic toiles become artworks in their own right that are full of life and feeling, expressing the deeply held convictions of Maria Grazia Chiuri. Mexican artist Elina Chauvet and a group of sixteen embroiderers therefore added their own words and symbols in red thread to these white toiles, created in the Parisian ateliers. Titled A Corazón Abierto (“open hearted” in Spanish), this unprecedented piece, created to speak out against the invisibility of female victims of violence, led to a poignant performance that closed the Dior Cruise 2024 show in Mexico. The power of this collective can be felt in the poetic photographs of Mexican artist Maya Goded.
