Artistic affinities

From an early age, Christian Dior was passionate about the arts and developed strong affinities with painters, musicians, poets, filmmakers and choreographers.

“We were just a simple gathering of painters, writers, musicians and designers, under the aegis of Jean Cocteau and Max Jacob.”

In Paris, he spent many evenings at Le Bœuf sur le Toit, a legendary cabaret bar popular with the artists and intellectuals of the era. Dior diverged from his parents’ aspirations by opening an art gallery with Jacques Bonjean in 1928, then a second one with Pierre Colle in 1931.

As a couturier, he connected his fascination with the arts with fashion, instilling the magic of music, literature and even architecture into his collections in a creative approach that has since been perpetuated by his successors. In the 1960s, Marc Bohan met and befriended Niki de Saint Phalle. The designer then created models for the highly creative artist, while collecting many of her artworks. Maria Grazia Chiuri is also captivated by Saint Phalle’s unique universe, which constitutes a major source of inspiration. Dior silhouettes paying tribute to the artist and her abundant imagination are displayed here, one by one.
